Prior to the gunshots, Ohiare Michael, Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, claimed that the EFCC had made a fresh attempt to arrest the former governor. According to Michael, Bello had voluntarily presented himself to the commission earlier in the day for questioning but was told to leave and return at a later date.

“It has come to our notice that people suspected to be operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are currently around the Kogi Government Lodge, Asokoro in an attempt to forcefully arrest former Governor Yahaya Bello,” Michael said in a statement. “They were shooting sporadically.”

Michael expressed confusion as to why Bello was not interrogated when he appeared at the EFCC office earlier on Wednesday. “Tonight’s attack was needless as the former Governor made himself available to the EFCC in their office for interrogation,” he stated. “The EFCC had no question to ask Alh. Yahaya Bello in the morning, but suddenly, they are out to arrest him.”

However, the EFCC has described Bello’s claim of honoring their invitation earlier in the day as false. The commission has not yet issued an official statement regarding the raid on the Kogi Governor’s Lodge.

Michael condemned the EFCC’s actions, suggesting that they were politically motivated rather than a genuine effort to combat corruption. “This action reflects much more than the fight against corruption,” he asserted. “We will keep Nigerians posted.”

The incident has sparked widespread controversy and raised questions about the EFCC’s tactics and the motivations behind the attempted arrest of the former Kogi State governor. As the situation continues to unfold, both the EFCC and Bello’s team are expected to provide further clarification on the events that transpired.
