During a conversation with The Sun, Okocha said that Rivers State Election Commission (RSEC) chairman, retired justice Eneberi, and his commission colleagues were hosted by the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC).
He added that the laws are clear and that the Chairman of IPAC made a statement encouraging the RSEC to set up the procedure for holding the local government elections.
Okocha emphasized that the legislation stipulates that local government elections must be announced three months before the end of the current chairmen’s tenures.
He emphasized that the statute expressly required that an election be held between three months and 21 days leading up to the actual tenure expiration.
He disclosed that their party began pounding this on January 19, the day they went to RSEC.
According to Okocha, when the media inquired about their purpose after the meeting, he replied that it was to direct the Commission to hold an election.
Quoting him, “One of the reporters asked me, since I am clamoring for this, should there be an election today, what will be the place of the APC?”
“I told him that APC will sweep the 319 ward councillorship positions and the 23 chairmanship positions.”
“Maybe that was what frightened the governor (Fubara), and he refused to conduct the election. If he had conducted the election, the amendment would not have come, maybe not immediately.”
“Now, what the chairmen are saying is not that they did not know that their tenure has expired on the 17th of June.”
“What they are saying is ‘you did not conduct the election for flimsy reasons. That there is political tension in the state.”
