These athletes found their calling in the ministry, dedicating their post-football lives to spiritual leadership and community service. These former footballers bring the same energy and commitment to their congregations that they once brought to their team.
Here are five former Super Eagles players who traded their football kits for pastoral robes
Taribo West
Known for his distinct hairstyles during his playing days, Taribo West made a name for himself in clubs like Inter Milan and AC Milan. After a 17-year career, West transitioned from the pitch to the pulpit, founding the Shelter in the Storm Miracle Ministries in Lagos.
In a revealing interview, West shared his profound spiritual experiences that led him to ministry, including direct revelations and guidance from God that transformed his life and ultimately led him to pastorship.
Alloy Agu
A figure in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the country’s debut World Cup squad that same year, Agu had stints with clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Turkey.
He stepped away from football early, compelled by a promise made to God. Today, Agu ministers at the Christ Divine Church of God, helping others find their faith journey.
Peterside Idah
Once a familiar face in Nigerian and South African clubs, and now a TV pundit, Idah committed to Christianity in 1996. Influenced by his pastor parents, he knew from a young age that his future lay in ministry.
Idah is now a pastor at Christ Ambassadors Church in Johannesburg, where he continues to lead and inspire the community.
Chidi Nwanu
Nwanu, who played for several Belgian clubs and shone at the USA ’94 World Cup, also represented Nigeria in the 1988 Olympics. He now leads a ministry in the United States, focusing on prophetic and deliverance services, helping many find spiritual guidance and support.
Ikpe Ekong
Starting his career with Julius Berger in Lagos, Ekong played across Europe and Africa before retiring in 2016. His encounter with Jesus in Sweden marked a moment in his life, prompting him to pursue pastoral work.
