Police on Monday, July 29, deployed teargas canisters to disperse protesting staff and students at the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Akoka, Lagos. The confrontation caused a stampede as the crowd scrambled for safety.
The protest was organized in opposition to the tenure of the college’s provost, Dr. Wahab Azeez, with demonstrators claiming his continued stay in office violates the Act governing Federal Colleges across Nigeria.
Despite the protest, Azeez maintains that his tenure, which began on May 26, 2023, has been officially authorized and confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Education under the new law signed by the President on June 12, 2023.
He expressed concerns about threats from unionists at the college, who have reportedly locked his office and issued a quit notice from his campus residence.
Azeez initially assumed the provost position in May 2019 for a four-year term and was reappointed for another four-year term on January 23, 2023.
His second term began on May 26, 2023. However, the Federal Colleges of Education Act, amended on June 12, 2023, now recommends a single five-year term for management officers of education colleges nationwide.
