The nation’s economic situation is inspiring citizens, especially the younger generation, to plan a large-scale demonstration, according to NewsNow.
The youth are adamant about carrying out the protest throughout the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, or FCT, Abuja, in spite of attempts by the government to put an end to the movement.
Omoyele Sowore, a former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, is one of the protest organizers. On Wednesday, he discussed the demands with a NewsNow correspondent.
The impending demonstration, dubbed “Days of Rage” and “EndBadGovernance,” aims to alert the federal government to the problems the country’s economy is suffering.
Protesters are demanding a number of things, such as the reinstatement of fuel subsidies, the settlement of issues pertaining to the electricity sector, the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, from the custody of the Department of Security Services, and the introduction of diaspora voting in general elections.
According to Sowore, Nigerians are pushing the Federal Government (FG) to dispense with the 1999 Constitution and establish a people-driven constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria after an independent National Conference and ensuing National Referendum.
Other demands include increasing education spending, giving Nigerian students money rather than debts, pushing for free compulsory education for all children in Nigeria, and raising the minimum wage for Nigerian workers to at least N250,000 per month.
In addition, the demands include for the demilitarization of the South East, the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the release and recompense of all political and ENDSARS detainees.
The organizers also demand that Nigeria be restructured to accommodate diversity and regional development, that corruption be eliminated from the subsidy system, that investigations into past and current Nigerian leaders who have embezzled public funds be conducted, and that security agencies be reformed to prevent violations of human rights.
Significant investments in public works and industrialization for young employment, reforms in the electricity sector, a transparent reconstitution of INEC, reforms in the judiciary to guarantee citizens’ access to justice, and the introduction of diaspora voting are among the other demands.
