In his letter, dated September 12, 2024, Obasanjo highlighted Cuba’s longstanding resilience in the face of an economic embargo imposed by the U.S., which has been in place due to Cuba’s political stance. Despite the embargo, Cuba continues to lead Latin America in healthcare and remains politically stable, enduring U.S. interference for decades.
Drawing from his personal experiences and relationship with the Cuban government and people, particularly during Fidel Castro’s leadership, Obasanjo praised Cuba’s contributions to the fight against colonialism and apartheid in Africa. He pointed to these efforts as a reason to reconsider the sanctions that have been in place for years.
“I have great pleasure in addressing this letter to you, Mr. President, in my capacity as former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who has always advocated for peace, justice, and the well-being of all nations,” Obasanjo wrote. “It has been brought to my attention that Cuba is currently listed by the United States as one of the countries supporting or sponsoring terrorism globally.”
Obasanjo appealed to Biden to show compassion and empathy for the Cuban people, many of whom have suffered due to the ongoing sanctions. He emphasized that millions of Cuban citizens are bearing the brunt of their country’s inclusion on the U.S. terrorism list.
“I plead with you to act on this matter with compassion and empathy for the millions of Cuban citizens who are bearing the brunt of this inclusion,” Obasanjo wrote. “I trust that you will kindly give it due consideration.”
