A group of individuals suspected to be involved in internet fraud, known locally as ‘Yahoo boys,’ reportedly caused a tragic accident in Ogun State. The incident resulted in the death of a one-year-old child and injuries to several others.

The accident occurred on Thursday when Ogunbunmi Rukayat, 24, was carrying her baby, Sekiniat, on her back. The grey Lexus ES350, driven by 27-year-old Ishola Qudus, lost control and overturned after hitting the pedestrians. Qudus was accompanied by three others, who were reportedly drinking inside the vehicle before the crash.

According to Ogun Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola, despite rescue efforts, Sekiniat was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta. Rukayat and another injured individual, 60-year-old Adeola Olufolake Elizabeth, are receiving medical care. The driver and his passengers, who sustained minor injuries, were taken to Aro Psychiatric Hospital for a toxicology test to determine if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident.
