Governor Idris made this declaration in Birnin Kebbi on Friday during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to the Government House.
He addressed rumours suggesting that his administration was unwilling to adopt the new minimum wage, assuring workers that once the necessary framework is in place, the new wage will be implemented.
“The federal government, which approved the wage increase, has yet to begin payment, as the necessary procedures are still being worked out,” Governor Idris noted. “When the time comes, my administration will engage in discussions with the NLC to determine the best approach to implement the new wage.”
He also clarified that the state’s deduction of N500 as an annual development levy, a practice dating back to the era of the defunct Sokoto State, is legally permitted and represents only a minor deduction of N11 million from workers’ salaries.
During the visit, Comrade Murtala Usman, the Kebbi State NLC Chairman, expressed gratitude to the governor, commending him as one of the most worker-friendly leaders in the country.
