A heated exchange has erupted between Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and the Abia State government following the launch of the Ohafia-Arochukwu Federal road reconstruction project.
Governor Alex Otti criticized previous administrations for neglecting the road since its initial construction in the 1960s. He highlighted the deterioration of the road as a result of political manipulation and lack of maintenance.
Senator Kalu, representing Abia North, responded by defending his contributions to the road’s development. He claimed that the Federal Government’s Petroleum Trust Fund and his legislative efforts were instrumental in the road’s partial reconstruction. Kalu expressed disappointment that Governor Otti did not acknowledge these contributions.
In a rebuttal, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Otti, accused Kalu of spreading false and misleading information. Ekeoma challenged Kalu’s assertions about the road’s funding and construction, arguing that the current project, spanning 41.4 kilometers, surpasses the previous efforts. He also suggested that many Abia indigenes, including Kalu, often use routes through Akwa Ibom due to poor road conditions.
Ekeoma dismissed Kalu’s claims as attempts to deflect criticism over his tenure as governor, alleging that Kalu’s road projects were substandard and managed poorly. He emphasized that the people of Abia are the ultimate judges of the road’s impact and construction quality.
