The previous protests, held from August 1 to 10, aimed to address Nigeria’s economic challenges but were marred by violence. Reports indicate that 17 people were killed in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna, and Jigawa, and many others were injured when security forces clamped down on demonstrators. Over 1,135 individuals were arrested nationwide as a result of the unrest.
In Kano State, some individuals posing as protesters vandalized government property, looted personal belongings, and even waved Russian flags while advocating for military rule. The police arrested around 873 suspects in Kano, with 76, including a foreigner, transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further investigation on charges of sedition.
Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju told DAILY POST that efforts are underway to secure the release of some detained protesters. Sowore confirmed that some detainees have been released, with ongoing efforts to free others. He stated, “We are working to ensure all detained individuals are released. We appreciate the support from human rights lawyers and will soon issue an ultimatum to the federal government if they continue to act recklessly.”
The upcoming October protest is expected to be a response to President Bola Tinubu’s alleged failure to meet the protesters’ demands. The EndBadGovernance group had previously called for significant policy changes, including the reversal of fuel subsidy removal, an increase in the minimum wage to N250,000, the release of detained political figures, and reforms to the judiciary and security agencies.
Despite President Tinubu’s address on the sixth day of the August protests, the organizers feel their demands were not adequately addressed, prompting plans for the #FearlessInOctober demonstration.
