Uche stated that the state government has received at least 1000 petitions and complaints against churches, clubs, pubs, and other religious groups in Enugu metropolis for causing noise pollution.
He said the engagement was part of Governor Peter Mbah’s Enugu megacity goals, and that the government was working to reduce noise pollution to zero percent through the execution of the Anti-Noise Pollution Policy.
In December 2023, as part of its urban regeneration agenda, the State Government urged all nightclubs, beer parlours, and other entertainment businesses in the capital city to reduce noise pollution, particularly in residential areas.
Uche stated that the aim of contacting stakeholders was to make them aware of the planned implementation and potential punishments, and she advised churches and entertainment facility owners to employ acoustics in their buildings to keep their activities from bothering their neighbours.
The chairman went on to say that the purpose of the meeting was not to demolish any churches or entertainment centres, but rather to discuss on how to make residential neighbourhoods more welcoming.
He vowed to shut down any church or entertainment centre illegally located in residential zones, while those who refuse to comply with government directions, even if they have a noise permission from the state government, would face sanctions.
Uche pledged that the agency would be humanitarian in dealing with the situation, which, he said, was not intended to damage anyone but rather to make the state more livable and in the best interests of its residents.
