Mr. Shekarau was speaking at an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN).
Despite his high-profile positions, Shekarau says he lives in a rented house in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Contrary to what might be expected of someone with his political background, he does not own a home there.
His residence in Kano is his only owned property. This modest living situation, he explained, stems from a life guided by the values instilled in him by the MSSN.
During his tenure as governor, which spanned eight years, Shekarau emphasized his commitment to integrity and transparency.
He proudly stated, “In my 44 years of public leadership, including my tenure as governor, I have never once tampered with the local government funds nor have I engaged in negotiations with contractors for personal gain.”
He attributed his steadfast moral compass to the foundational moral training provided by the MSSN, which he continues to champion.
Shekarau’s ongoing commitment to the MSSN
Shekarau currently serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the MSSN. Under his stewardship, the society aims to bolster the educational, economic, spiritual, and political fortitude of the Muslim community.
He highlighted the expansive reach of the MSSN, which now operates 37,000 branches nationwide, indicating the profound impact of the society on the Muslim youth across Nigeria.
The former governor also touched on recent achievements and future aspirations of the MSSN. After a lengthy struggle spanning over a decade, the MSSN secured a plot of land in Gwarinpa, Abuja.
The first project completed on this new land is the mosque where the press briefing was held. This milestone marks just the beginning of many ambitious plans intended to foster unity and encourage active participation in governance among the members.
