On August 5, House Spokesman Hon. Akin Rotimi announced the dissolution of the committee. Critics argue that this move appears to cover up sector issues and insist that any reversal should be achieved through a formal House resolution.
The Alliance for Transparency, which includes several lawyers and CSOs, has sharply criticized Speaker Abbas for this decision. They argue that the dissolution undermines the work of the Joint Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) and (Midstream), originally led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere and Hon. Henry Okojie. This committee was established through a formal resolution in a House plenary session to investigate critical issues such as the importation of adulterated petroleum products and crude oil shortages.
John Lalong, National Coordinator for the group, questioned the legitimacy of the House’s decision, which was announced through a media statement rather than a formal resolution. The group expressed disappointment, noting that the dissolution followed allegations that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) might have exerted financial pressure on the House leadership.
