“We have done work for him, the whole house – Suleiman – he is trying to beat him. He is a hard man. Are you a hard man here? Are you a tough man? Tough man, the police is going to see that if you don’t want to pay money.”

In his prosperous days as a top player in Anambra State politics, Uba commanded a lot of respect, popular, powerful and ruthless.
He was both dreaded and adored. Uba was a demigod of some sort; he made many politically and at the same time, marred the political career of others.
During the 2003 elections, Uba reached the peak of his power by “sponsoring” candidates from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) across Anambra State.
Following the election, he declared himself “the greatest godfather in Nigeria,” asserting that he had single-handedly positioned every politician in the ststate.
Among those Uba backed in 2003 was PDP governorship candidate Chris Ngige.
Their relationship was formalized in a written “contract” and “declaration of loyalty,” which Ngige signed before the election.
Uba reportedly shared a copy of this document with Human Rights Watch, claiming it proved Ngige’s subsequent failure to honor their agreement.
In the contract, Ngige pledged to demonstrate absolute loyalty to Uba, referring to him as his mentor, benefactor, and sponsor.
He also agreed to let Uba control all significant government appointments and the awarding of government contracts.
The document referred to Ngige as the “Administrator” and the unelected Uba as “Leader/Financier.” It granted Uba the authority to retaliate as he saw fit in case of any breach by Ngige that could not be resolved through mediation.
In 2022, Uba boasted to have influenced the rise of governors and senators.
“I have made many high-ranking politicians in Anambra State and beyond since 1999,” Uba stated.
“I produced Chinwoke Mbadinuju and Chris Ngige as governors. I played a role in the making of Peter Obi, Willie Obiano, and Charles Soludo as governors of Anambra State. I also influenced countless senators, House of Representatives members, and state assembly members.”
The decline of Chris Uba’s political influence began in 2019 when he and his brother, Andy Uba, contested against each other for the Senate seat in Anambra South Senatorial District on different party platforms.
This internal conflict was seen as a struggle for supremacy and was perceived as driven by greed and over-ambition. The rift ultimately led to the downfall of the Uba political dynasty.
