The Gunners are expected to step up their efforts over the coming weeks as Mikel Arteta and Edu look to strengthen their ranks.
In terms of concrete leads, Arsenal
are said to be in talks over Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, but things have slowed down on that front.
The Gunners have several areas which they could do with strengthening, including up front.
It can be argued that the lack of an out-and-out No. 9 cost Arsenal crucial points in the Premier League title race last season.
And with just two points separating the champions from the runners-up, this is something Arteta and Edu may well look to rectify.
Now, according to a report, a player who has been routinely linked with Arsenal could now be available at a £30million less than previously quoted.
The player in question is Ivan Toney and, according to The Sun, Brentford may look to slash their asking price to less than £50million.
The Bees previously wanted in excess of £80million for the 28-year-old, but an apparent lack of interest this summer has set alarm bells ringing in west London.
Admittedly, the article does say that Arsenal have no plans to bid for Toney, but a lack of success on the transfer front so far may well lead to them revisiting their interest.
There is no doubt that the Gunners need another option up front, an out-and-out target man who knows how to convert chances. And Toney is great at that.
Toney has proven himself in the Premier League and also did well at Euro 2024 for England in the limited game time he received under former boss Gareth Southgate.
Last year, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports
that Toney is “one of the best attacking players in the league”, while Thomas Frank deemed him “the best penalty taker in the world”.
In addition, Tottenham are said to be after Toney, so there’s the added incentive of depriving Spurs of a player who could really cause Arsenal damage next season.
Perhaps the Gunners ought to be honest in negotiations and tell Toney that he would be a squad rotation player rather than a regular starter, if Arteta plans to stick with his current setup and players.
