Lawmakers voiced concern that these aggrieved Nigerians might resort to violence and rebellion against public officials.
The debate ensued following a motion titled “Urgent Need to Address Food Insecurity and Market Exploitation of Consumables in Nigeria,” sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi Steve of Kogi West Senatorial District and co-sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume Mohammed of Borno South Senatorial District.
Former Senate President Ahmed Lawan, commending the motion, warned of the public’s waning patience.
He cautioned that if immediate action isn’t taken to help resolve the economic burdens caused by increased fuel and electricity prices, among other issues, the populace might turn against them.
Meanwhile, former lawmaker Shehu Sani recounted encountering protesters in Wuse 2, Abuja, who recognized him and permitted his passage.
Sani later cautioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio against passing through Wuse 2, suggesting potential unrest.
Chieftain of the Labour Party, Mr. Kayode Oyeniran, expressed concerns to DAILY POST in Abuja, stating that government officials may need to find hiding places if the protests proceed.
He highlighted widespread anger among Nigerians, connecting it to economic issues and perceived excesses in lawmakers’ salaries and allowances.
