Recall that President Tinubu had week, approved the creation of the Federal Ministry of Live Stock Development, as part of measures to mitigate farmer/herder conflict as well as boost livestock farming.
A Committee on Livestock Reform Implementation to drive the Ministry in the interim will be chaired by President Tinubu while former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega will serve as Vice Chairman.
The President inaugurated the Committee in Abuja on Tuesday, sequel to the submission of the report of the National Conference on Live Stock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.
Speaking to newsmen in Awka, on the development, the acting National Youth Leader of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu said Nigeria as a country has suffered enough from the farmers/ herders clashes, which is contributing grossly to the food insecurity across the nation.
“This is a genuine and proactive measure in response to the monstrous and apocalyptic Security and Economic challenges posed on Nigerians, as a result of the long-standing neglect of this paramount sector of our livelihood and economy.
“This shall go a long way to manage, control, and mitigate the incessant and unnecessary killings and destructions that are associated with Livestock Business across Nigeria.
“For us at Ohaneze Ndigbo, it is a welcome development to separate Livestock Development from crop production, as this shall enhance focus and maximize the Impact,”he said.
Okpalaezeukwu commended President Tinubu for the prompt inauguration of the Livestock Reform Implementation Committee and encouraged Prof. Attahiru Jega, the Co-Chairman and members of the all-important Committee on the need to ensure that all concerned stakeholders are carried along to serve the purpose of the Committee.
According to him, the decision of Mr President, to ensure that the traditional method of livestock farming will need to be reviewed and repositioned with the support of modern technology and stakeholders, which include state governments, in order to open up new opportunities for growth and prosperity, is a step in the right direction.
