Darlington Orji, the Caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, has responded to a recent ex parte Order of Interim Injunction issued by the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt. The injunction, granted by Justice Stephens Jumbo, restrains the Chief Judge of the state and the Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly from interacting with the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly. During an interview with Arise TV, Darlington Orji emphasized that the Martin-led group lacks the authority to serve an impeachment notice on the governor. He stated that due to their actions, they are not currently recognized as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Orji noted that the people of Rivers State are prepared to resist any impeachment efforts from them. He emphasized that the Martin-led administration lacks the legal standing to serve an impeachment notice on the governor. He pointed out that, as of now, they are not members of the Rivers State House of Assembly because of the trouble they caused themselves. Therefore, they cannot serve an impeachment notice on the governor, and the people of Rivers State are ready to resist such actions. For Orji, what is important is that the governor is focusing on developing Rivers State and bringing the dividends of democracy.
Orji also mentioned that he has the right to go to court to request that the Chief Judge of Rivers State not recognize these individuals. He asserted that, as long as they are not recognized by law, their status will remain uncertain until the Supreme Court pronounces on it, which will then clarify whether they are members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In his own words, he remarked, “The Martin-led administration lack the locus to serve impeachment notice on the governor. As at today, they are not members of Rivers State House of Assembly for the trouble they caused themselves. So, they cannot serve impeachment notice on the governor. And the Rivers people are waiting [for] that to happen, and we are going to resist it. For us, what is important is that the governor is concentrating in developing Rivers State and bringing dividends of democracy.
I have the right to go to court to say please, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, don’t recognize these people.
