The Minister of Defence, Bello Matawalle, has called on the residents of Sokoto State to report any unemployed individuals living extravagantly to security agencies. He made this appeal during a meeting with stakeholders at the Sokoto State Governor’s office, emphasizing the potential threat such individuals may pose, as they could be informants for bandits destabilizing the region.
Matawalle’s visit to Sokoto, alongside Chief of Defence General Christopher Musa, was on the directive of President Bola Tinubu. During the visit, Matawalle underscored the critical role of community involvement in combating banditry across Northern Nigeria.
He urged Sokoto’s citizens to actively collaborate with security agencies by sharing crucial information that could help address the rising insecurity in the state. Matawalle highlighted that the effectiveness of security operations largely depends on the intelligence provided by local residents.
He stated:
“Just as we did during my tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, I encourage the people of Sokoto to consistently provide information to security personnel. If you observe someone who is unemployed but is frequently changing cars and spending money extravagantly, please report such an individual. They might be serving as informants for bandits.
“We are here to eliminate the harmful elements among us, and by God’s grace, we will succeed. We have also recruited 200 individuals from each of the 23 local governments into the Sokoto Community Guard Corps to support the efforts of the security forces in the state.
“As you know, security matters are not for public discussion. However, Your Excellency, rest assured that we are doing a lot. With your presence here today, I am confident the people of this state will sleep peacefully, knowing that you are a leader who stands by his word.”
