The confusion started when one team of police officers, who were in plain clothes, met another group of plainclothes officers. Neither group recognized the other. In the tense environment, each team thought the other was a group of IPOB members. This misunderstanding led to the tragic exchange of gunfire.
Initial reports suggest the incident happened due to a lack of communication and clear identification. Both groups were not in uniform and did not have marked vehicles, making it easy for them to misidentify each other.
The police in Abia State have started an investigation to find out what went wrong. A police spokesperson said, “We are looking into this incident to understand the mistakes and prevent such events in the future.”
