The zonal coordinators expressed their displeasure over the recent developments surrounding President Tinubu’s promise to provide buses for student union bodies in government-owned universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics nationwide.
The students made the call in a statement signed by NANS Northwest Zone A Coordinator [Bilal Lawal Kurfi], Coordinator, NANS Zone C [Daniel Friday Egga], NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator [John Alao], Zone E Coordinator, Northeast [Bappa Adam] and Zone F Coordinator, Southeast [Chidi Nzekwe].
“This promise, which was announced on July 13, 2023, by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, was welcomed with high hopes and expectations by the entire student community”, the student leaders said.
They said it was disappointing that several months have passed, and the promised buses have not been fully provided to the respective institutions.
The NANS coordinators lamented that the failure to deliver on the promise has left students and their families grappling with the same transportation challenges the initiative aimed to resolve.
They said: “The zonal coordinators express our deep displeasure and concern regarding the recent developments surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s promise to provide buses for student union bodies in government-owned universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics nationwide.
“However, it is disappointing to note that several months have passed, and the promised buses have not been fully provided to the respective institutions.
“The delay or lack of implementation raises serious concerns about the commitment of the government to the welfare of its citizens, particularly the youth who are the future of this nation”.
They argued that the government that made the promise must fulfill the promise, pointing out that the government’s credibility is built on trust and the ability to deliver on its commitment.
The NANS leaders, therefore, called on the president to act swiftly on the promise.
