Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, through his Senior Special Assistant on Strategic Communication, Allen Sowore, clarified that the police began profiling the suspects following their arrest on Day 10 of the #EndBadGovernance protest in Akure, the state capital.
Sowore emphasized that Governor Aiyedatiwa did not authorize the arrest and opposed any attempt to politicize the situation.
He stated: “Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa wishes to clarify misconceptions surrounding the detention of Mr. Kunle Ajayi, the AAC’s 2024 Ondo State governorship candidate. The governor was not made aware of the arrest until the evening of August 10, 2024, when security chiefs provided him with an update.
“The governor learned that the protest marking the 10th day of the #EndBadGovernance movement had been infiltrated by criminal elements. The police are responsible for maintaining order and ensuring safety, which is their constitutional role.
“Thus, it is incorrect and politically motivated to associate the governor with the arrest. The governor was informed that Mr. Ajayi was detained along with other individuals on the police’s wanted list.
“The police will carry out their preliminary investigations and follow the appropriate procedures.
