BREAKING: Take anti-corruption fight to rural areas, Kwara monarchs task EFCC

Published

on

Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take the fight against corruption to grassroots towards deepening the anti-corruption fight for a more effective result.

As part of activities marking the 2024 African Union Anti-Corruption Day, themed, “Effective Whistleblower Protection Mechanism: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption”, the officials of the zonal command of the EFCC on Thursday led other sister agencies, traditional rulers, associations and individuals on a road walk through designated routes in Ilorin, the state capital.

Speaking with journalists during the walk, the Olusin of Isanlu Isin, Oba Solomon Oluwagbemiga Oloyede, who spoke on behalf of the chairman of the traditional rulers’ council, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, advised the commission to appoint officers in all the 16 local government areas of the state for the task.

The traditional ruler, who described the walk as a good exercise aimed at fighting against corruption in the society together with the anti-graft agency, said that it should be taken to communities, villages, and from primary to secondary schools.

“The EFCC should also set a day for the anti-corruption walk exercise in the grassroots areas of the state whereby the villagers would move round their communities and villages to preach to residents and embark on advising young ones against corrupt practices and catch them young against corruption.

“This is because corruption is everywhere in the country. Example of corruption is examination malpractice prevalent in our schools. If this form of exercise is taken to nooks and crannies of our state, corruption would be wiped away”, he said.

Also, the executive chairman of the anti graft agency, Ola Olukoyede, in his message, titled, Deepening Anti-Corruption Fight Through Effective Whistle Blowing, said that, aside from terrorism, corruption ranks as the next deadliest affliction of humanity in every region of the world.

Olukoyede, who was represented by the zonal director of the EFCC, Harry Erin, said that one way of fighting corruption is through the whistle-blowing initiative.

“In view of the danger and threat to our existence which corruption represents, it is imperative that individuals, communities, corporate bodies, and indeed the whole world join hands together to tackle it frontally. One way of doing this is through the whistle-blowing initiative.

“The Whistle-Blowing Policy in Nigeria was launched on December 21, 2016, by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Finance as an anti-corruption programme that encourages people to voluntarily disclose information about fraud, bribery, looted government funds, financial misconduct, abuse or embezzlement of government assets and any other form of corruption or theft.

“The theme of the 2024 African Anti-Corruption Day is “Effective Whistleblowing for Corruption-Free Nigeria”. Whistleblowers are anti-corruption promoters. Through their efforts, anti-corruption agencies are alerted about environmental compromises that should be investigated. The alert can come through verbal and non-verbal corridors. At the EFCC, the Eagle Eye app is an established corruption reporting device that generates intelligence the Commission can leverage. I urge whistleblowers to key into this device. Mails can be sent, telephone calls can be made, and personal visits can be made to any EFCC Command across the country to expose acts of shadiness around us. We also assure every whistle-blower of protection. EFCC will never betray you!

“One salient fact about whistle-blowing is that it shows commitment and drive towards anti-corruption. No effort is too little in this regard. Although there are ample rewards accruable to the whistleblower, the most important thing is the need to move the wheel of anti-corruption forward. This is a duty for every Nigerian and it is the focus of this year’s anti-corruption Day.

“On this note, I want all of us to embrace this obligation more seriously. We cannot win the war against corruption through lip service, emotional outbursts, or mere mob campaigns. There is a need for commitment, passion, consistency, and credibility of intelligence. Every whistle blown must point towards truth and evidential proof. There is punishment for false claims and misleading intelligence.

“Finally, let us always remember that corruption affects all of us. An internet fraudster poses as much danger to our collective progress as a looter of our national treasury. We should not encourage their villainy by being indifferent, silent or non-committal. Whistle blowing is our own opportunity to kick against corruption. Let’s embrace it totally”.

Members of sister agencies such as the NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Customs, FRSC, and NYSC, as well as associations like RTEAN, NURTW, tricycle associations, heads of agencies, and parastatals and media, participated in the walk….READ FULL ARTICLE

Ndume: Tinubu Has Resolved To Be A One-term President, Nigerians Must Ensure His Defeat In 2027 – Lukman

Published

By

A former National Vice Chairman (North-west) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has said the actions of President Bola Tinubu have suggested that he is not interested in serving a second term as Nigeria’s leader….READ FULL ARTICLE

The former APC chieftain added that both President Tinubu and the APC are charting the way to lose the 2027 presidential elections and Nigerians must help them to taste defeat.

Speaking in a statement on Thursday, against the background of the sack of Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume as the Chief Whip of the Senate on Wednesday, Lukman said it is a testament to the fact that the current administration does not want to be criticized.

He added that the Tinubu government and the ruling APC are pushing Nigeria to the edges of dictatorial governance similar to what Nigerians witnessed during the days of military government under late General Sani Abacha.

Lukman, in a statement titled, “Fanatical Mindset,” lamented that free speech is under threat and personal liberties of the citizens are being encroached upon.

He also called out the Senate for allowing its operational independence to be rubbished after Ndume was removed based on a letter signed by the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, arguing that there was nowhere in the APC

Constitution where the National Chairman, National Secretary, or any official, or even the National Working Committee, is given the powers to summarily remove any principal officer of the National Assembly.

The former chieftain said it is a shame that the APC and the Senate Caucus got involved in such acts of illegality.

He said:“The way things are, it is almost as if President Asiwaju Tinubu has resolved that he will only be a one term President. Under his watch, the living conditions of Nigerians is continuously getting worse. Instead of making effort to develop clear plans to address the situation, the government is becoming more intolerant to criticism.

“Any democracy that cannot accommodate criticism is no democracy. A democracy that subverts fair hearing is a dictatorship. A democracy that permits a ruling party to demobilise its organs and inadvertently expels its members is worse than a military government.”

“The Tinubu government isn’t ready to listen to advice. They are not doing what is feasible, Nigerians are hungry and angry, everyone is affected, the president must be careful.

‘’Sending trucks of rice to governors that don’t care about the needs of the people, that don’t share in people’s pains, is tantamount to arbitrary corruption. They will give it to their party members, loyalists and even hoard it.

“Why is this government not listening? The more you bring such, the more the hardship. The truck of rice will only increase hardship and poverty, that’s not the solution.’’

‘’This is simple mathematics, like God revealed to Pharaoh about famine, God has revealed to prophets the situation of Nigeria, we have said this in 2022 about what Nigeria will experience, it is better the government listens before it kills the economy.
