According to news published by SaharaReporters, in the early hours of Sunday, Nigerian soldiers arrested a 75-year-old woman, Juliana Babe Onyeukwu, her son, Chisom Julius Onyeukwu, and two others during a raid in Abia State. This raid followed the killing of five soldiers by gunmen reportedly enforcing a sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Aba.

The arrests occurred around 2 am in the community of Umuala Ngwa Obi 1. A resident, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying incident. She explained that her elder brother, Chisom, heard a noise at their uncle’s compound next door. Concerned, he went to check with a young boy who lives with him. Upon arriving, they encountered people claiming to be from the Nigerian Army.

“They started beating him and took him back to our house. They searched everywhere but found nothing incriminating. Then they took my mother, brother, and our tenant,” she said. The family has not heard from them or received any information about their whereabouts since the arrest.

The raid was a part of the Nigerian military’s response to the killing of five soldiers at a military checkpoint in Obikabia junction in Aba Local Government Area on May 30. The soldiers were ambushed and killed by gunmen allegedly linked to IPOB. In the aftermath, the military vowed to retaliate against those responsible.
