‘I wanted to slap myself’: Varane opens up on his big mistake that allowed Man City eliminate Madrid from Champions League

“I have had several concussions,” Varane tells L’Equipe.

“If we look back at three of the worst games of my career, there are at least two in which I had suffered a concussion a few days before: against Germany in the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup and Real Madrid against Manchester City in the round of 16 of the 2020 Champions League.

“I felt it [the concussion] from the warm-up, I told myself: wake up. I almost wanted to slap myself. During the game, the first three balls were technically clean, but it was too slow.

“I couldn’t concentrate on staying in my game, I was like a spectator. The game went badly for me.

“In retrospect, I realized that it was related to the shock I had suffered… I questioned myself a lot and, finally, I realized that these unusual errors had not fallen from the sky,” Varane added.

Varane’s first mistake on the night was in allowing Gabriel Jesus to steal the ball from him and set up Sterling for Man City’s first goal.

In the 70th minute, Varane would make another blunder during an aerial duel to allow Gabriel to score City’s second. The game ended 2-1.
